Broadway Variety has deep roots in the South Portland community, beginning its journey across the street in 1981 as the Broadway Redemption Center, founded by Michael Pendleton. In the beginning, it operated exclusively as a bottle & can redemption center, but in 1983, retail products were added to the shelves—a milestone that marked the arrival of Rosemarie West, who started her journey as a cashier.
On April 1, 1987, Rose (or Rosy, as many people call her) purchased the business and became its new owner. As the store grew, a major physical milestone arrived during the summer of 1994 when the business made the move across the street to its current home at 771 Broadway, officially opening our doors on July 5, 1994.
Throughout the years, Rose's two children, Justin and Shaun, worked alongside her, growing up in and helping build the business. While Rose has since passed the reins to her children and stepped away from day-to-day operations, she hasn't strayed far—she can still frequently be caught hanging out at the store chatting it up with her loyal customers, many of which have been frequenting the business for many years!
Today, Justin’s son, J.T., has joined the operation full-time to learn the ins and outs of the trade, making Broadway Variety a true third-generation local family establishment!
